“Do you know that our soul is composed of harmony.”

Leondaro da Vinci

"[the Pythagoreans] saw that the ... ratios of musical scales were expressible in numbers [and that] .. all things seemed to be modelled on numbers, and numbers seemed to be the first things in the whole of nature, they supposed the elements of number to be the elements of all things, and the whole heaven to be a musical scale and a number."

Aristotle

BELOVED and the sound current

The Geometry of Sound

Resonance and vibration deep within our heart

It is a simple fact that music is based on mathematics. Put simply, each note has its own vibration, and it is the frequency of the vibrations that distinguishes one note from another. The notes on each scale are seperated from one another by simple mathematical proportions and our ear is able to recognise that instinctively.

As well as being a profound philosopher and mathematician, Pythagoras is accredited for discovering the simple fact that the pitch of a musical note depends upon the length of the string which produces it. This allowed him to correlate the intervals of the musical scale with simple numerical ratios. His discoveries in the fields of music and astronomy led him to his most profound realisation, 'The Harmony of the Spheres', wherein he proposed that the planets and stars moved according to mathematical equations, which corresponded to musical ratios, therefore producing a symphony.

At BELOVED we honor that harmony with the Starlit Hall, a resonance chamber with an 8-9 second decay. It is a bridge of Heaven and Earth, a space where we can bathe in the sound vibration - the symphony of the heavens. We can go deep within the cavern of our heart.

Plato

"Music is the mediator between the life of the senses and the life of the spirit."

Beethoven

"Music is the art of the prophets, the only art that can calm the agitations of the soul."

Martin Luther

"If you learn music, you'll learn history. If you learn music, you'll learn mathematics. If you learn music, you'll learnmost all there is to learn

Edgar Cayce

"If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music."

Albert Einstein

Plato

"Harmony sinks deep into the recesses of the soul and takes its strongest hold there, bringing grace also to the body & mind as well. Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order."

In the beginning there was sound ...

Music is in our soul

Sound as an awakener to consciousness

Virtually every civilization in the world has some type of creation story that involves sound. In these stories, a universal sound is equated with consciousness and life itself. It is the first creation, and everything else arises from it. A number of spiritual, mystical and religious texts have spoken of the sound current as an element of their most honored traditions.

  • “In the Beginning there was the Word and the Word was with God.”

  • The Logos is the manifest word and a word of manifestation, reflected in Christ and the Song of Songs.

  • Indigenous of this continent called it, “Song of the creator”

  • The Sufi’s named it Saute Surmad, which means, “The tone that fills the cosmos.”

  • In Hinduism it is called Akash Bani, meaning “Voice of the Heavens”

  • Lao Tzu said it is “The Great Tone” - the source of all things

  • In Sikhism, “Sat Nam” is the foundation of the teachings. It means “Truth (the sound current) is our name, and their entire holy book is written in song.

" Many say that life entered the human body by the help of music, but the truth is that life itself is music."

Hafiz (Persian Sufi poet)
